Flash 10 on Fedora 10 x86_64

If you are using Flash 10, you do not need libflashsupport anymore as the usage of ALSA has been fixed in this version.

Users of Fedora x86_64 must install the nspluginwrapper.i386 package to enable the 32-bit Adobe Flash Player plug-in in Firefox, and the libflashsupport.i386 package to enable sound from the plug-in.

Watching Netflix Movies via the PS3

Using Windows XP on a virtual machine on Fedora 9, I was able to stream Netflix movies to my PS3/TV using PlayOn. It works flawlessly!

My existing issue with NetworkManager on Fedora 9 running on my Macbook Pro seems to have gone away with the latest update.

Glad it's working now, even though blame was quickly shifted towards ndiswrapper, which I haven't changed. :-)

Quick shell access with 'tilda'

This is pretty neat. Tilda is a little application that let's you access a terminal on your desktop like Quake games. You hit a key, and the shell slides on your desktop, hit it again, and it goes away. On Fedora just do:


yum install tilda

Run it as a regular user for configuration.

Getting Macbook Pro (4,1) Penryn touchpad to work on Fedora 9

The driver is at: http://web.comhem.se/rydberg/Bits/. Follow the directions to compile, and install.

Now, the 'options usbhid quirks' did not work on Fedora 9, at least not for me. There was some discussion about the fact that usbhid not being compiled as module in Fedora... So, the work around is:

On your /etc/rc.local add:

echo -n "7-2:1.2" > /sys/bus/usb/drivers/usbhid/unbind
modprobe bcm5974

7-2:1.2 is the device id of your trackpad, and this will unbind usbhid from taking over it so the device allowing bcm5974 to work.

PS - This relates to my instructions on how to get Fedora 9 running on a Macbook Pro (4,1).

ndiswrapper + macbook pro + latest NetworkManager = problem

For the past 2 weeks or so, I've started experiencing a lot of freezes on my Macbook Pro while running Fedora 9. After some investigation, I've found out there is some sort of bug on NetworkManager that makes the CPU lock up when using ndiswrapper.

The workaround (for now) was to disable NetworkManager:

chkconfig NetworkManager off
service NetworkManager stop

And, use system-config-network to set up my wireless (well, at least if you want it done via GUI).

I've just filed a bug with Fedora's Bugzilla about it.

During the last few days I've had a popup on this blog asking for twitter authentication... I apologize about that. It was a double mistake from my part:

1. Protecting my twitter profile (which required users with account on twitter to see my status).
2. Forgetting twitter's badge (javascript based) on this blog.

It should be resolved now.

This is dumb, but I am a dumb guy, so I find it useful.

I am always getting 'diff -u file1 file2' out of order... as in, sometimes I execute:

diff -u file1 file2, but what I really needed was: diff -u file2 file1

...

A way to make sure that you always get the result you want, independent of the order fed to diff is by using the '--to-file=' option.


diff -u --to-file=file1 file2

Gives me the results I want.

Like I said, dumb, but handy.

Fedora 9 keeps erasing my iPod Classic

My iPod Classic gets mounted perfectly under Fedora, I can go through my playlist on Rhythmbox, and even play my music while mounted (Yeah, I have gstreamer-plugins-{bad,ugly} installed).

Yet, every time I unmount my iPod, and look back at the contents within it, everything is wiped out. I am not even able to remount it on itunes without restoring the whole device.

A bit annoying to say the least.

Fix for Picasa 2.7 on Fedora Linux 9

One caveat though, I had to:


rm -rf ~/.picasa

after doing the fix above for it to work.
